Have just got hold of a book by Malcolm R White called "Herrings, Drifters and the Prunier Trophy".
Very informative about the herring industry in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft from the 30's to the
decline of the herring in the 60's with loads of pictures of both Scottish and English boats with
the complete list of the winners and runners up of the Prunier Trophy and their catch.
I'd give it five and I bought it !!!!
( only the oldies would understand )

Lillian Beckwith wrote the green hand a right good read about going to the creels and the herring ringing.

Sorry aboot the noise Geordie,but you auld lads arenae supposed tae need as muckle sleep as us laddies ye ken!! As for a good yarn....Peter Buchan's "Collected Poems and Short Stories" takes a bit of beating. Even if you havenae got a full command of the Doric they're still perfectly understandable and very funny. A certain Mr.Jim Campbell who is on this site is nae slouch wi' the pen either,and his wee bookies of poems are well worth a read too.Written in the North East dialect,the real life characters are guaranteed to keep you laughing.I can highly reccomend them.
